BTS and ARMY Members Celebrate Jimin's Birthday

This article is about the popular boy band BTS, it covers the birthday of one of the members Jimin.On October 12th each member of BTS wish Jimin a happy 24th birthday via their public twitter page where photos and videos of Jimin, with personalised messages such one of the members Jin jokingly saying (translated) “ “Jimin-ah, happy birthday, I wrote this for a period of three hours,”, in which fans showed their upmost love for their favourite artist.The article develops to talk about how when midnight hit on October 12th , BTS, were in Saudi Arabia to continue their ‘speak yourself’ tour where the fans (ARMY) sang happy birthday , along side the members, in Arabic where the article states “an ecstatic jimin reacted to”. lastly, the article documents how jimin opened up on VLIVE ( an idol broadcasting app) about his gratitude and happiness with the members and ARMY.

This story appeals to an audience as it refers to current mainstream media as it’s a very popular band that has a massive fan base so fans can receive the gratification of personal identity and relationships ( blumler and Katz). It could also offer surveillance as it provided education and informs non Kpop fans about BTS and why and how they are so popular. Lastly it could be a form of new representation for BAME people , especially Asians , as seeing Asians rise to popularity through embracing their culture ( kpop) could let other Asians feel gratified and proud.

I think this is an example of quality journalism as it’s exploring a different culture while reflecting the teen vogue brand of celebrity news .

1) Why does Clay Shirky argue that 'accountability journalism' is so important and what example does he give of this? Accountability journalism is important as Shirky argues it's the journalism that can call out the illegal journalism that occurs.He uses the story of Father George Geoghan as an example here. 2) What does Shirky say about the relationship between newspapers and advertisers? He suggests that some newspapers used advertising but also have accountability journalism.
