representation theory

1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies?

representation is important because it provides a view on identity in a society. This view can be changed by the media and can be perceived differently by people.

2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media?

it shows that that the subject , in this case Kate Middleton, has no control over how she is being represented in the photographer, it represents her as being an alcoholic when really she was finishing a drink .

3) Summarise the section 'The how, who and why of media representation'

In the media, its essential to question who is creating representations and why  as media products have specific functions this representations can create stereotypes, ideologys etc.. and the audiences can attach themselves to them easily without question.

4) How does Stuart Hall's theory of preferred and oppositional readings fit with representation?

the views can be represented in different ways, some audiences can agree with the views where as others can oppose them and see then in a different , and most often, negative light

5) How has new technology changed the way representations are created in the media?

new technology such as the internet has created a space for people to voice their opinions on representations that are either goof or bad. this means companies are more selective and try t make their products as easy to represent as possible with as little negative backlash as possible.

6) What example if provided of how national identity is represented in Britain - and how some audiences use social media to challenge this?]

national identity is represented through the example,e of zoella AKA Zoe Sugg who is a famous British youtuber who uses the media for self representation, she uses it to make her self to look as visually pleasing as possible as well as making her life look admirable , however this doesn't always have positive impacts.
