Audience Theory 1

Hypodermic needle model

1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of video games. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?

this article states that "Playing violent video games for just 20 minutes a day can encourage aggressive behaviour" which links to the hypodermic needle model because it claims that by watching or playing violent video games you are more likely,as an individual, to be influenced to carry out the violent behaviour. Also, because the videogame is a piece of media the hypodermic needle model suggests that is is most likely going to influence the passive mind.

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?

this article links to the Hypodermic Needle Model as its suggesting that the reason the boy did what he did was as a result of only playing violent video games. Some may criticize this as other factors may have led the boy to do this, such as his upbringing , parents and possible mental issues.

two-step flow model

1) Summaries the two-step flow model. In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?

the two step flow model suggests that  most people form their opinions of media through the influence  of opinion leaders. I believe that this theory is still relevant today as social media is a massive way for people to get influenced and with the growth of Instagram stars, YouTubers etc.. more and more people are being influenced by these people who they feel they relate to

2) How does this YouTube blogger fit into the two-step flow model?

this YouTube blogger fits in the two step flow model as they have over 2 million subscribers which means they have a big enough platform to voice their own opinions for it to be heard.this makes them an opinion leader

3) How this this Telegraph feature on Britain's most popular tweeters fit the two-step flow model? Do you think these accounts genuinely have an influence over their audience?

The tweeters fit in the two step flow model as they have a large following which means they can voice their opinion on a platform where they know people care. i believe these accounts genuinely have an influence over their audience as they have such a large loyal following which means they do have an effect on people otherwise why else would these people follow them ?

4) Read this BBC profile of Jamal Edwards. How does Jamal Edwards link to the two-step flow model?

jamal edwards links to the two step flow model as he is an opinion leader who has gained alot of wealth and success through his opinions aswell as a large following on social media.

  Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points

Diversion: stranger things - a form of entertainment and escapism. stranger things is a supernatural. sci fi horror netflix programme which has elements of fantasy which is unrealistic.
Personal Relationships: eastenders- forming a connection witht the characters. Eastenders is programme that has been running for a very long time and still has many of the origanl acdtors from the earlier episodes so many people have seen these characters grow which forms a connection to them
Personal Identity: ackley bridge- a way for people to relate to the characters. Ackley bridge is a programme about school, ethnic minority and living life as a young person so many younbg people can form connections and identify with the characters in this show.
Surveillance: bbc breakfast-. this programme provides news weather and info for people living in the uk.

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?
Yes i agree that audiences have become dependant on the media because the media has grown alot over the past 50 to 60 years and many news or media producers use social media to get there content across to their audiences which menas things like BBC news use social media like twitter to help people who dont watch tv get the news around the world etc...

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media?
the growth of new technology means that more and more people are using it but there is now a thing called "fake news" which means more people are getting false news and making it harder to trust the media.

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? Why?

in my opinion, the media can affect me positively and negatively as i can choose whether or not i want to view it positively or negatively.
