regulation reupload

1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?

regulation is a way to provide rules and regulations to ensure that organisations operate
fairly in the media.Media industries need to be regulated because the media products need to ensure that they protect  public order and support the instruments of government and justice.
The protection of individual and sectional rights and interests that might be harmed by unrestricted use of public means of communication.
They should  promote  the efficiency and development of the communication system, by  innovation and connectivity. The media products should also ensure there is freedom of communication for individuals as well as diversity and safety. regulation also allows  maintaining conditions for effective operation of free markets in media services, especially competition and access, protection of consumers, stimulating innovation and expansion.

2) What is OFCOM responsible for?

The Office of Communication (OFCOM) is responsible for regulating television, radio, telephone, services and some aspects of the internet.OFCOM is also responsible for granting licences to TV and Radio stations and it is illegal to broadcast TV or Radio signals without a licence from OFCOM.

3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why?

Section 1: Protecting the Under-Eighteens- i think this is is an important section in the broadcasting code because exploitation of minors is a very dangerous thing and it can be very dangerous for children to have freedom online or be in danger of their life , without regulation of this lots of children can be in danger

Section 2: Harm and Offence- similar to the first one without this being regulated peoples lives can be in danger as well as a potential rise in crime and discrimination etc

Section 8: Privacy - this is very important in regulation as peoples lives can be ruined as well as things like important official documents , addresses, personal information could be leaked endangering people so this also should be regulated to the maximum

4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why?

i do agree with OFCOM's criticism on channel 4 because children of a young age would definately be watching television at this time which means they were exposed to violence and possible strong language which for there age should be regulated and completely hidden from them as it could traumatise them or it could influence things to things that reflect that of the movie.

5) List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice.

Section 1: Accuracy
Section 2: Opportunity to Reply
Section 3: Privacy
Section 4: Harassment

Section 5: Intrusion Into Grief and Shock

6) Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?
The PPC was criticsed because of its lack of  powers meant that when a newspaper had been  found to breach the rules, the best a victim can hope for is an apology, which  does not get sufficient ouput in the paper. Critics also argue that many newspapers seem to fly in the
face of the rules on a pretty regular basis and that very little is done to stop them.

7) What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?

the levision enquiry is a public inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the British press following the News International phone hacking scandal, chaired by Lord Justice Leveson

8) What was the PCC replaced with in 2014?

the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO)

9) What is your opinion on press regulation? Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio?

In my Opinion, i think press regulation is sufficient to an extent but i definitely l think that
newspapers should face statuary regulation like TV and radio because the newspapers have too much freedom and they can be bias in the content they put out as they can have a strong political standing as some can be more right wing or more left wing which can affect some people if they take it too far

10) Why is the internet so difficult to regulate?

the internet is very hard to regulate because the internet makes content available from all over the world so laws passed in the UK aiming to regulate music videos, are ineffective against material being hosted in other parts of the world.
