introduction to Representation

1) List the different people/groups represented in the trailer (men/women/Americans etc.)

men: dominant,heroic,strong,fearless, intelligent

women: weak, emotional, fragile, in need of help
america: strong,intelligent,rich/developed
kidnappers: foreign(European) ,overconfident, evil

2) For each group you identify, decide whether the representation is a dominant or alternative portrayal. Explain why you think this.

I think the representation of the people in the movie are dominant because many movies that involve a kidnapping usually have a female as the victim and  the saviour as a strong fearless male who does his duty to , in this case, save his daughter  who is the victim of the the kidnapping . the kidnappers are foreign which is expected as they strong accent always shows that the daughter is in danger as they have very few lines that have am impact on the hero aswell  as the audience in the movie.

3) What stereotypes can you identify in the trailer?

that kidnappers are always foreign who are cold and heartless.

the hero is a fearless strong male who does whatever he can in the name of justice to save those he cares for.
the victim being a frightened and sensitive female who cant help herself but needs a strong male to help her.

4) Why might the Taken trailer offend or alienate certain groups?

it may offend foreign people as the thick accent could be seen as a negative stereotype that all foreign people have thick accents and can only speak a few words of English.

5) Why do mainstream film and television texts such as Taken so often use stereotypes?

they often use stereotypes as a media code for a quick understanding in what the media text is all about. Its not meant to offend, its only there to allow the audience to quickly understand  what the narrative and characters are all about
