Cultural Industries

What does the term 'Cultural Industries' actually refer to?

the creation/ production of products of a creative or artistic nature

What does Hesmondhalgh identify regarding the societies in which the cultural industries are highly profitable?

the societies are supportive of the cultural industries as they are highly profitable and their is high demand for them . these products also have economic stability and can be seen as sustainable.

Why do some media products offer ideologies that challenge capitalism or inequalities in society?

due to competition many companies try to do things new , unique , controversial and different in order to grab the attention of consumers so they do challenge norms in order to be more profitable and more on trend

What are the problems that Hesmondhalgh identifies with regards to the cultural industries?

its a risky business to be involved in and not many people choose creativity over commerce. Most products are deemed to expensive  due to their high production costs so not many consumers go for that specific creative/ artsy product. They would rather go for more affordable products that have low production costs.

What is your opinion on the creativity v commerce debate? Should the media be all about profit or are media products a form of artistic expression that play an important role in society?

i believe that the media is a platform where people can express there creativity and art. I dont agree that the media should just be about commerce , profit , money etc... as its a way for people to connect and show things and share aswell as learn , inform/ be informed which should all be free and be less criticized for its affects on people.

Do you agree that the way the cultural industries operate reflects the inequalities and injustices of wider society? Should the content creators, the creative minds behind media products, be better rewarded for their work?

Yes i  do believe the actual creators should get more credit and more spotlight as without them the product wouldn't even exist so they should receive the most recognition and profit.

 What is commodification?

to make something into a product for commercial and profitable use
