2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

  • i could show that the scene was in the morning by showing an alarm clock going off, letting light in from closed curtains or face the camera at the ceiling as if it was person waking up.
  • to show that my film is taking place in London I could use a montage of all the landmarks in London.
  • I would play popular 60's music to indicate the time period aswell as making the costume fit the 60's such as bright colours accessories etc...
  • to show that a character is a married policeman i would film a close shot of his hands and ring on his wedding finger.
  • to make it seem like the audience is watching a thriller i would create lots of suspense between scenes as well as dark lighting.
This is the opening to the popular Netflix series 'stranger things'. It is a combination or sci fi and horror.it opens in a science lab in what looks like a small town in america(suggested by caption) which is the geographical marker. the fact the opening scene is stars suggest it is late at night which is the temporal marker. the first character is wearing a lab coat which makes it obvious that he is a scientist in the laboratory. lastly the fact the door opens really quickly and loudly to shock the audience suggests that this is going to be a jumpy/ scary tv series (generic marker).

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
they allow the audience to have their own imagination about the  media product and make their own assumptions based on their own views.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
Episodic narrative (the series)
a story that is told through a series of episodes, or segments.
Overarching narrative (the serial)
a situation that is brought up in every episode or every other episode
Mixed narrative
dont have an ongoing story that needs to be watched one episode after another, can be watched randomly
Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)
where different narratives take place in one episode
8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
adverts usually have problem (bad breath) and use their product (toothpaste) to solve the poroblem
