Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?
icons are important because they allow the media to get across a visual representation to the audience. They are also very important as they usually are the only piece of visual representation the producers use to get their product known. Indexes are also important as they allow connotations to be created by the audience. Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing? global brands may avoid to use symbols in their products and or advertisements as they may be unclear and many symbols have various meanings. So if a global brands was to use a symbol that has multiple meanings the audience may be confused and their product would be unsuccessful

this advert has failed communicate appropriate community guidelines as it looks as if its saying that its okay for people to "spike" drinks which is very dangerous as it has led to both women and men being harmed, raped or even killed which is most likely not what the media producers wanted to get across. The advert also shows a bold piece of text  ,"best friends", which suggests that its okay to harm people close to you and that its okay to betray trust which definitely shows how this media text has failed as it goes against community guidelines.

nike-just-do-it-1.jpgthis example of the nikes "just do it." advert has been successful as it promotes a good message with no confusing symbols. Its simple and straightforward which makes its successful. The tick ,symbol, has positive connotations and has no other meanings behind it which means audiences wont get the wrong idea.
