Everyday Sexism
1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?
Laura Bates started the Everyday Sexism project due to her own experiences when she encountered casual sexism in her everyday her life and when she went to talk about it everyone found it normal. Laura Bates didn't want for women to think its normal therefore she created the Everyday Sexism Project.
2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?
the project opposes the concept of post feminism as it shows examples of how equality hasn't been achieved as of yet. I think feminism is still required in western societies to enforce the cleanse casual sexism.
3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
new technology is essential as its spreads hashtags stories and opinions of people who have encountered everyday sexism. the internet has gotten the project its popularity.
4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?
i personally dont think there will be a day where the project isn't required as its a "norm" in society for men to be able to subtly take advantage of women as they feel they wont fight back. This is due to fact that sexism has been around for a very long time and women have always been either very inferior or slightly inferior to men.
1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
network feminism is feminism that is being spread through the use of new technology to establish social equality . Its become a problem as due to fast rise in technology and media its thought that feminism is being left behind.
2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?
Suffragette movement, Reproductive rights & Equal pay, Empowerment & reclamation of femininity, use of new technology. I somewhat agree , however i do think that we are in the end stages of the third phase as society needs to tighten on social equality and accept feminism totally.
3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.
everyday sexism: The aim of the project is to document examples of sexism from around the world that many women experience on a daily basis such as discrete remarks of a women body, cat calling , groping in public areas,... usually things like this would go to unnoticed or would be brushed aside from society but the website allows women to speak put and hopefully end this " everyday sexism"
HeForShe: This is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of gender equality, initiated by UN. Its goal is to achieve equality by encouraging all genders to partake as agents of change and take action against negative stereotypes and behaviors. Its aim is to create a shared humanity where everyone of any gender is treated equally and respectfully.
FCKH8: this is a social media campaign that was founded in 2010, which sells t-shirts and accessories that features slogans with a social justice theme such as homophobia, sexism, racism and other social issues in society. It aims to verbalize those who create discrimination in a very controversial way. For example , it put out a video of young girls saying swear words to challenge sexism which was seen as unacceptable in some lights
This Girl Can: this campaign urges women to take part in the male dominated industry of sport which lacks female representation and calls out the media to push away the stereotypes of women not being able to take part in sports as they are seen as too " fragile" This campaign has grown and has had a lot of positive growth, spotlight and support.
4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?
As a young woman in this technological society, i find feminism very important and i definitely agree with the concept of the fourth wave but i dont know if it will ever come to that stage in out society as its a social norm that women will always be the tiniest bit inferior to men no matte how hard feminism is pushed into society. However i could be proved wrong as the growth and introduction of campaigns such as ' everyday sexism' could extinguish sexism to the tiniest amount and could let women live in a completely equal society where the young female youth, which i am a part of, and later generation could live and grow happily
